THE

ungymed experiment

Discipline, Consistency, Easy

Discipline, Consistency, Easy

The "ungymed" part of this title came from a simple realization: the time I spent driving to the gym and waiting for equipment, could be better spent exercising at home or in my neighborhood. (And yes, I know "ungymed" isn't a real word!)

The "experiment" part is more personal.

Looking in the mirror, I hated what I saw. I was about a biscuit shy of 300 pounds, my cholesterol was dangerously high, and I was already taking medication for blood pressure. My doctor warned me that things needed to change. More importantly, I knew I needed to change for my son.

After failing as the "gym guy" more times than I can count, I decided to try something different: one set of push-ups a day.

That first set took about two minutes. Most of that time was spent getting my fat ass down to the floor and back up again. But it was a start.

Over time, those two minutes became five. Five became fifteen. Those small efforts, repeated often, eventually helped me leave behind medication for both high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

This is still an experiment. I'm still learning, adjusting, and figuring things out as I go.

But it isn't just my experiment anymore.

I don’t want this to be about me. But when you have been around the sun as many times as I have, through trial and error, you figure some things out. I don’t know everything so I would love your input as well. As a community, we will figure this out.

If you can relate to any of this, I'd be honored to have you join me in The Ungymed Experiment.

A little about me

Hey, my name is Kevin Southwick. I’m 59 years old. I’ve been exercising consistently for about seven years. During that time, I’ve lost 50 pounds and kept it off.

There’s nothing particularly special about me. I’m not a professional trainer, and I don’t have a fancy degree in sports science or kinesiology. I’m just a regular guy who, for the first time in his life, accidentally figured out how to stick with an exercise routine.

Along the way, I realized that if I can do it, anyone can do it.

Why Am I doing this?

People who know me know I’m not the kind of guy to want to try and build a website so I can communicate with people about my passion for exercise. I’m like a caveman trying to write an email for hell's sake. I’m not much of a social butterfly either.

However, when I was finally able to stop the cycle of starting and quitting the gym and experiment with a new approach, I decided to document this journey with the hope it changes your life like it has mine.

what you can expect

The foundation of THE UNGYMED EXPERIMENT is finding a way to make exercise easy enough to do consistently.

The biggest truth I’ve discovered is this: you can have the best ideas, equipment, gym, coaches, and support in the world, but if you’re not taking action, it’s completely useless.

The challenge is that “easy” is different for everyone, and it changes over time. What feels easy for you might feel difficult for me, and vice versa.

That’s why this experiment isn’t about finding the perfect workout or perfect whatever. It’s about finding your sweet spot—the point where you are willing to do something consistently.

Once you find that sweet spot, you’re off and running. So to speak.
